“SIMpLE” research project (Smart solutIons for health Monitoring and independent mobiLity for Elderly and disable people) for patients with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
“SIMple” is a research project funded by MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research of the Italian State) aimed at the creation of an advanced technological system based on brain-computer interaction (BCI: Brain Computer Interface).
The aim of the project is to create an innovative technological system (add-on) that can be installed on commercial electric wheelchairs, designed for people with disabilities: the add-on system is modular and consists of four sub-systems:
- guide module controlled by the movements of the patient’s head: the head acts as a Joystick for managing the trajectories
- BCI electronic module wearable by the patient, able to control the movement of the wheelchair through the use of the cerebral biopotentials of the motor district; the patient, completely immobilized, is able to manage the motors of the wheelchair by imagining the movement of the limbs.
- biomedical module, aimed at real-time monitoring of vital parameters, such as ECG, respiration and any dysphagia phenomena
- wheelchair geo-localization module and autonomous driving system, without human intervention (unmanned)
